My passion is glass. My specialty is warm glass which is heated to a temperature of up to 1600 degrees Fahrenheit. I enjoy combining different types of glass and using different shapes, firing times and temperatures. I am particularly interested in dichroic glass which has unique color properties. This glass is manufactured by depositing microscopically thin layers of metal oxides on extremely clean glass and processing it in a vacuum chamber. The reduction in the vacuum chamber causes light to change colors as it is reflected and/or transmitted. Sometimes the glass seems to show several colors at the same time, depending on the angle.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Arts, Crafts, and Interior Design from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, my focus was fiber -- weaving, stitchery, tie dye, macrame and batik. Although these disciplines have held my interest since childhood, I eventually "morphed" into glass.

I began my glass business in 1985 designing and fabricating two dimensional installations such as windows for churches and homes. Although I still accept those commissions and Tiffany-style lamps, I devote almost all of my time to "warm" glass. The relatively cooler temperatures ("hot" glass is heated to 2500 + F.) are still hot enough to fuse two or more pieces of glass together and to "slump" glass into various shapes -- and to give a nasty burn.

My very creative maternal grandfather influenced my artistic upbringing. Because he had mastered many media -- pen and ink, pastels, oil, charcoal, all sorts of paint, and photography -- spending my summers with him and my grandmother nurtured this interest. My mother and sister are also creative, proficient in needle arts.

I like to "push the envelope", within my artistic discipline, using unique, one of a kind glasses and different treatments of other art glasses. I truly enjoy combining unlikely elements to see what can happen, especially with dichroic glass. Being a "compulsive" person has aided my production. I make all of my dishes, gift items clocks and jewelry one at a time. I encourage suggestions from customers who ask, "What if you put this and this together." or "Have you ever done anything like this?" Creativity, like color and light, is continual and ever-changing.
